WND: "According to a pair of recent polls, for the first time since the 9/11 terrorist hijackings, Americans are more fearful their government will abuse constitutional liberties than fail to keep its citizens safe. Even in the wake of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing – in which a pair of Islamic radicals are accused of planting explosives that took the lives of 3 and wounded over 280 – the polls suggest Americans are hesitant to give up any further freedoms in exchange for increased “security.” The overwhelming police response in Boston was both awesome and terrifying. From what I saw, individual policemen remained respectful and protective, but the overall management of the man hunt was draconian and far more invasive than warranted or needed."
What stays with me is the way both local and Federal authorities behaved in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. Of coarse everyone knew the New Orleans police department was and is incompetent and corrupt and the area is for the most part, lawless in the best of times, in the wake of disaster and while looters were running rampant, what were authorities doing? They were systematically disarming law-abiding citizens in their homes. The authorities were not only, not protecting people, they were making them vulnerable to the predators they were not controlling.
Their motivation was not to purposefully harm or endanger citizens; it was a much more craven motivation. It was one of placing their own safety and welfare above that of the people they are sworn to serve and protect. Authorities were unjustifiably concerned that first responders were at risk by armed home owners. It's an "us" and "them" attitude and they don't trust "us" any more we trust "them". That's what it has become.
